Thanet was originally invaded in around 55 Bc by the Romans and
Richborough was apparently where the fleet landed.
The Roman road network stretched across the country.
Pfizer complex near Sandwich is today one of the major players in thanet commerce in Kent. A new roadway is presently being built to take traffic away for the village of cliffs end for the expanding Pfizer network.

After the Romans departed, Thanet found yet more invaders in the form of Saxons in AD 449.
St Augustine is said by to have landed at Ebbsfleet, before founding Britain's first Christian monastery, in Canterbury.
Then again Thanet was not left in peace and the Vikings arrived, twice in 851 and 864.
Sandwich being one of the Cinque Ports in medieval times to include Sarre, Birchington, St John's, Margate, St Peter's, Woodchurch and Ramsgate.
In 1335 Thanet had the highest population density in Kent.
The popularity of the seaside resort grew. Holidaymaker's came by boat from London; until the rail system took over then packed trains flooded Kent's seaside resorts for many years to come.

The Isle of Thanet is an area at the most easterly point of Kent, England.
Today Thanet consists of 26 miles of golden sandy beaches.

Thanet was originally cut off from the mainland by the Wantsum Channel, which in places was over a mile across.
Two branches of the Stour flowed into the Wantsum.
The Romans built a port protected by Richborough Castle; Reculver fort was at the western end.

Thanet continues to be regarded as one of the top locations in the UK for property investment.
Factors contributing to this are.

  • The presence of the Universities and Academic Institutions including one of the countries leading catering colleges
  • Excellent accessibility by road, rail (by 2010, only 55 mins to London) and air.
  • A large transient population.
  • A shortage of housing in the area
  • Massive regeneration for businesses
  • Rapidly expanding Airport facilities
  • Easy access to Europe
  • Excellent beaches and areas for relaxation

Until the mid 18th century there was a ferry between Sandwich and the island.
From the 15th century there are only marshes and mudbanks through which the Stour meanders on its journey to sea at Sandwich bay. The Wantsum valley is still liable to flooding, as is much of Kent reclaimed land over the centuries.
During the 1953 floods Thanet was cut off for a few days, but the sea defences have been strengthened since then.
Thanet is still in the process of re development. One of the most exciting changes will be the fast commuter trains due to arrive in 2010 at Ramsgate. The trains will run via Ashford on the Eurostar line to Ebbsfleet in London and dramatically cut down commuting travel times to London (currently 2 hours, could be 1 hr 05 minutes. Prices jumped in 2003 but have now stabilised. Low priced properties with sea views are probably the best investments - it's possible the town may become a third as popular as it was back in the 1950s - before foreign budget travel put an end to its popularity.
